Sept. to March

Alaska Winter Solstice December 21th

Alaska's Cultures, both Native and Non-Native are deeply effected by its snow and cold conditions. The length of day and night changes 6 to 7 minutes per day, getting shorter until December 21th, (3 hours of day light) and then longer till June 21th, (24 hours of day light). Alaskan cultural activities are deeply effected by this constant change and changing weather. The weather is totally unpredictable and can change by the hour and from one close location to another. This can have a profound effect on what can and what can not be done. This makes it almost impossible to stick to a strict schedule. Most Alaskans are not in the habit of watching their watches to see if everything is on time as are some people from other cultures. Alaska's relaxed life-style and logistics make this kind of behavior not conducive to experiencing what Alaska is really like. That is part of the adventure of Alaska, it is unpredictability. Living with, not against the flow of Nature.

Evening Activities

Aurora Viewing
You will be transported to an Aurora viewing Lodge that is one of the best viewing locations in Alaska. Visitors usually watch for several nights before seeing speculator Aurora. When they see it they want to see more, so most winter visitors to Alaska watch for Aurora every night they are here. Optima viewing time is between 11pm - 4am so visitors stay up most of the night and do not get up until afternoon. For this reason other activities begin in the afternoon.

Native Culture Show
May be presented in the evening at Chandalar Ranch Lodge as an extra free attraction of the Alaska Northern Lights Tour.  It is presented when aurora is not visible so as to give clients entertainment and information about Alaskan Culture while waiting to see aurora. It may not be presented on nights when there is a possibility of see aurora all night, so as not to interfere with the aurora viewing.
